If you are a first-time traveler to SA for fishing this is the one for you!
Jeffreys Bay is a small coastal town in the Eastern Cape with a population of 27 000 Known world-wide for its surfing with the annual Winterfest surfing competition taking place here. However it is amongst fisherman a well-known favourite too, and in many professional opinions the best of the Best!
The main selling point of Jeffreys Bay is the versatility; it offers a major variety of species, result consistency and generally really good counts of strikes in a day varying from 3 and some days even 20! On top of that due to the geographical landscape of Jbay it almost always offers a fishing option even in the most adverse fishing conditions should they prevail.
Some days can result in 8 – 10 different species of sharks and rays varying in size from 5kg to 200kg all in one session. If you spend a week with us you almost guaranteed to have a couple encounters with 100kg -200kg sharks per angler. We love targeting and catching big sharks and rays from shore!
Similarly Rocky sessions for small edible species can also result a specie count over 10 as-well. It is still one of the only areas left in the world that 100 pounder kob/mulloway/jewfish are still being caught, attributable to the numerous estuaries that provide a safe breeding space for the big females. Kobs of over 15kgs are still few and far between and require intensive and dedicated targeting that should be communicated to you beforehand to manage your expectations.
We pride ourselves on this honesty that any professional in the industry should hold.
Typically, the mornings provide very enjoyable weather conditions with little to no wind and good sunshine. Around midday, one should expect typical east winds to pick up that can blow up to 35km/ph. Do not worry though, we are geared for this and will go out of our way to make it as comfortable as possible – this is one the many advantages of utilising our services as we are the most prepared for all conditions.
Temperatures are generally very comfortable ranging between 23 and 31 degrees Celsius. However, if the sea temperature is cold and there is a bit of wind it gets chilly very quickly, so be sure to have a decent wind breaker! The sun is quite harsh, South Africa has a high UV so make sure you have clothes that is UV50+. We do also sell some if need be.
When planning your trip, the first thing to remember is the majority of the fish we catch bite fairly stable throughout the season. So whether you come in November or April there aren’t major differences. However we like to cater to your exact needs wherever possible. And there are slight variances in species and quality of fish depending on what you after. I like to setup a trip tailored to you. So the best would be to get hold of me directly and I will ask a few questions and piece together a good understanding of you as a angler and pick the best period. Below though you will see a summary that might help you plan your trip.
- September to 15 November:
The season for big kob! (AKA Kobtober) If you want a go at a 50lb + kob or simply good kob action then this is certainly the time. There are also good catches of Garrick, on live baiIf the sea is abit big for the surf sessions we have a good chance at mussel cracker off the rocky areas. Although not easy fishing. Very rewarding and a special catch when accomplished.
It’s also the start of the shark season and particularly later in October you can have some beltar bronzie action.
- 15 November – January:
Prime Bronzy time! Usually around November for a few weeks we have bronzies arrive in crazy numbers. If timed correctly and abit of luck you could bump into as many bronzies as the human body can physically handle. Some days are unexplainable! As they pass through and the bronzie action normalises so the stingrays and other species come settle into summer waters and some really good catches of all species are made. - January – April:
Variety! Imagine casting a big piece of quality bait usually mackerel or a live mullet. A strike can be absolutely any of the species in our waters. A really good time to book most people interested in traveling to SA. The average size fish might go down but the amount of strikes certainly increase. - April – May: The season for big raggies! Towards the later part of our season the big Ragged tooth sharks come into the bay and other areas to pup. Giving you the opportunity to catch seriously trophy sized specimans 160kg and up. Bronzies are also roaming saying goodbye just before they move north with the sardines. There are ofcourse also other species to catch there are also great catches of Garrick in the surf using live baits as well as decent kob fishing.
